10 Reasons Network Marketers Struggle

In our years of network marketing, Doug and I have witnessed home based business owners who have been extremely successful, while others who received the same training have struggled.

I asked my husband why he thinks this happens. Together, we put together these 10 reasons network marketers struggle.

Struggle Reason #1: Not treating your network marketing business like a business

Yes, it’s an old cliché—“Treat your business like a business and it will pay you like a business, and treat it like a hobby and it will pay you like a hobby.”

Think about it, do hobbies pay or do they cost money? Would you open a traditional business and merely hope that people will show up, or would you have a grand opening and launch that business? Would you close the doors to that business when you don’t feel like working?

Treating your business like a business means consistent effort over time is required, just like a traditional business. The difference is, there is the potential for it to not only pay off more than a traditional business, but to offer time freedom as well.

Struggle Reason #2: Not Having Realistic Expectations

Like any business, network marketing requires effort and dedication. There is work involved. It is not a sudden get rich quick scheme or like a slot machine.

It takes time and patience to build a successful network marketing business. If you sponsor a new distributor and lead them to believe they can just sign up a few people and then sit back and wait for the checks to roll in, you are misleading them.

Struggle Reason #3: Not Focused

This is another common struggle area for network marketers. There are certain activities in your business that ultimately lead to revenues and profits. It is key that you focus on those areas. There are some key areas you need to focus on:

  • Prospecting
  • Presenting
  • Recruiting
  • Following up
  • Training
  • and Getting customers

Struggle Reason #4: Not Developing Personally

Life is a series of learning experiences. If we shut out the education we can receive from various sources, we will not grow.

A person’s network marketing business will grow at the rate that the person who owns and manages that business grows. If they are consistently reading, attending training seminars, consulting mentors, etc., their business will show positive effects.

Struggle Reason #5: What Could Have Been Instead Of What Will Be

This struggle reason does not just fit with network marketers; it is a common issue with a large percentage of the human race.

If I would have done it this way, maybe this would have happened instead.”

If only is a negative way to view the future. There is nothing wrong with learning from past mistakes and failures, but dwelling on them will do nothing but drive you into depression and failure.

I personally love this quote by Ray Higdon: “If it doesn’t serve you, don’t talk about it”

Struggle Reason #6: Playing The Blame Game

We can try to blame results on our sponsor, the company, our spouse, the weather… On and on.

In network marketing, the only actual person that you can blame is looking back at you in the mirror.

But better yet, why blame at all? What good is blaming doing?

Blame, shame and justification aren’t going to lead one to success. Each one of us is in control of our own destiny.

Struggle Reason #7: A Business Plan that is not in Integrity with One’s Goal

Goal setting is vital, but the actions have to match in order to achieve the desired goal.

This is why network marketers often say “watch their feet, not their mouth.” Many people say they want to change their financial situation, but then don’t take the actions needed to get there.

Struggle Reason #8: Lack Of Confidence

When a network marketer does not have confidence in their self, the MLM company or in the products, they will have extremely difficult times enticing other people into joining their team or using the products.

Humans have an inner sense and can tell when a person is not confident.

Often times, lack of confidence is just a matter of a need for additional personal development and the right mentoring.

Struggle Reason #9: Not Staying Consistent

Starting and stopping can almost guarantee failure in network marketing. It’s better to do even just one income producing activity a day in your business, consistently, every day, than to do a week’s worth of massive action and then take a break for weeks or months before starting again.

Consistency is an important aspect in building a massively successful network marketing business. Daily consistent activities will compound and eventually lead to the “hockey stick effect.”

Struggle Reason #10: Overextending Or Being Distracted

I put these 2 together because they are closely related to each other.

Some network marketers try to manage more than 1 MLM business or delve into other potential income producing opportunities. There is nothing wrong with having multiple streams of income, but if one is conflicting with another, you are setting yourself up for failure on all sides.

And in the same sense, distractions can be a common issue. If you have a plan to perform certain income producing activities at certain times, but you get caught up in checking social media, watching television or some other activity not scheduled, you are distracted from your original plan.

There is nothing wrong with the distractions I mentioned if they are done during times when you have not scheduled your network marketing priorities.

Conclusion

So do you feel that you are struggling with your network marketing business? You should go back through this list and see where the issues may be. I would say that your struggle most likely is in one of these areas.
